2019: Choosing Fruit

Which is easier?

To drive to the store and purchase those Sour Patch and Milky Way bars (okay those are my personal weaknesses) OR

Go grab a banana or the grapes you purchased last week from the kitchen?

How about if you had both snacks (healthy and unhealthy) in your kitchen which are you going to probably grab when you get a urge for a quick snack during the next commercial break? (I realize many of you are probably wiser than me and said some fruity thing but walk with me a minute. :o)

Now we all know what the healthier choice is.

HOWEVER,  if I am honest and were asked to make a list of all the sweets, junk foods and snacks I enjoy I would need multiple sheets of paper AT THE SAME TIME if you ask me about a list of healthy snacks (fruits and vegatbles) give me uhmmmm give me 5 – 6 lines and I’m done.

Same thing with sin issues. I have a list of things I could work on or enjoy. My primary one being my heave foot. And I would love to say it is heavy because I’m a 6 foot chic with a size 11 but that’s not it at all. My Dad would sometimes get hold of fast cars when he was a car salesman and I loved when he said jump in and hit the gas. But actually I can’t blame my driving issues on my Dad as he didn’t teach me to throw rubber or take curves. No I picked that up all by lonesome and even as a preacher’s wife I never lost the love of any of the above.

Sadly sin comes easy like that. We may see or experience a taste of it because someone else introduced it to you (like Sour Patches – my kids introduced me to those) but most we keep on our short list simply because we tried it and liked it.

The same thing goes with driving issues AND heavier things like money issues, sexual issues, anger issues and other physical or verbal issues, alcohol etc., And we, the people, continues to do them because it feeds something inside of us even when we know we shouldn’t.

We buy things when we know we weren’t able to pay off our last credit statement. We indulge with drink although we know it leaves us feeling less than good later. We indulge with food although we want to lose weight. We holler and get angry with the little things the people we love the most do when the people we work with were the ones who made us crazy.

None of it makes sense but we get in a cycle of STUPID!

The reality is that sin like sugar is addicting and it never feels you up but always leaves you wanting a little more.

But nothing frustrates me more than diets that rob me of my Dr Peppers (which if you know of a DP diet plan please comment below :o) Every plan I have found says drop the sugar items except fruits. UGHHH!! So? I don’t diet.

What do I do?

I just choose to skip my junk food rows and intentionally focus on the few things that are good for me (grapes are still good for you if you load them with salt, right?)

Same with sin. We have to choose to recognize the ‘sweet stuff’ that adds unwanted baggage to our lives and leave it out of reach.WHILE intentionally stocking up on those things which make our lives, our faith… us – healthier.

So I am NOT going on a physical diet this year but I did get Wheat Thins and grapes instead of chocolate and sour patches.

And I am not spending all my spiritual efforts focusing on the negative I have done or do as much as reaching for the ‘fruit’ and truths that will enable me to have a vibrant life and give me the strength to step over those things which hinder me.

So this year I choose grapes and JOY.

You might choose another fruit of the Spirit: love, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness or self-control. But maybe this year would be a good year to chose AT LEAST one and dig into the Word and remind yourself of the promises and life attached to being healthy in the Lord.

If you do choose I’d love to know which one you are going to focus on… so feel free to leave me a comment.

 Galatians 5

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: [d]adultery, [e]fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, [f]murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [g]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
